CLASS ACTIONS

A class action is a lawsuit that is filed by a representative plaintiff on behalf a group or class of plaintiffs that have a common legal issue to be determined by the court. Class action legislation provides an opportunity to pursue cases that (because of the legal costs involved) may not otherwise be economically viable for individual plaintiffs.

In 2006, Ellis Business Lawyers successfully prosecuted an informal class action in Federal Court (Read full decision here) on behalf of taxpayers to recover refunds of FST from the federal minister of revenue.

In November 2007, Ellis Business Lawyers filed a class action in British Columbia Supreme Court on behalf of halibut fisherman to recover monies obtained by the federal minister of fisheries under a quota holdback scheme initiated by the DFO in 2001.
